Dear all,

SKA-Korea is a group of scientists from the Korean astronomy community interested in the science and technology of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and closely related fields. We are happy to announce the next colloquium talk by Prof. Lister Staveley-Smith. The talk will be broadcasted by Zoom. Everyone is warmly invited to join. Please find below details of the talk.

Best regards,

Jae-Young Kim

*Title: SKA Regional Centre and Scientific Use Cases

*Abstract: The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) is the largest radio telescope ever built by astronomers and will revolutionize humanity's understanding of the Universe by enabling major scientific breakthroughs in cutting-edge research. One of the keys to achieving this mission is to effectively process the massive amount of data generated by the SKA and turn it into scientific products. The SKA Observatory and stakeholders will establish a complete end-to-end scientific data processing system, in which the SKA Regional Centre (SRC) will be responsible for key functions such as processing SKA data, long-term storage, software development and user support. China has actively participated in constructing the SKA telescope and preparing the Chinese node of the SRC. The Chinese SKA team has built the world's first regional data centre prototype, which provides important benchmarks and operational experience for the SRC prototype system. Chinese scientists have actively participated in the construction of the SRC international network, from which they have learned about the challenges of SKA big data and participated in the development of SKA data processing software, which is crucial for the future use of SKA data to fully exploit and achieve scientific results. Through the international cooperation platform of the SKA Regional Centre, China SRC has already established good cooperation with other SRC nodes. China SRC processes SKA Precursor Telescope data and stores some pilot survey data to support scientists in publishing high-quality research results.  As a dedicated SKA science data centre, China SRC strives to maximize convenience for scientists in the Asia-Pacific region by expanding its capabilities according to the needs of science users and technological development. In this talk, I will introduce the current status of China SRC and highlight the science cases achieved with China SRC to inspire and promote the collaboration of SKA research teams in East Asia.
