Deadline: October 1st, 2015

The Max-Planck-Institut f?r Radioastronomie (MPIfR) is recruiting two qualified individuals for postdoctoral appointments in radio astronomy. These positions are based in the Radio Astronomy/VLBI department led by Prof. J. Anton Zensus.

The research department has a broad research portfolio. Key research topics focus on the investigation of compact extragalactic objects (AGN) and their broad-band emission, with a special emphasis on very-high-resolution studies.  These include mm- and space-VLBI imaging  and blazar monitoring with F-GAMMA <http://www3.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/div/vlbi/fgamma/fgamma.html>/MOJAVE www.physics.purdue.edu/astro/mojave/>/TANAMI <http://pulsar.sternwarte.uni-erlangen.de/tanami/>.  The MPIfR operates the VLBI correlator, the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg <http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/en/effelsberg> (element of EVN <http://www.evlbi.org/> and GMVA <http://www3.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/div/vlbi/globalmm/>), and it is major partner of APEX <http://www.apex-telescope.org/> in Chile (element of EHT <http://eventhorizontelescope.org/>).

We are looking for two persons to join our department as a postdoctoral researcher. Technical mastery of radio interferometry techniques is of advantage, as well as a good publication record.  Candidates with complementary skills to our research portfolio are especially encouraged to apply.   Appointees will be expected to join our research lines and collaborate closely with other department members.  The International Max Planck Research School for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IMPRS) <http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/imprs/> offers the opportunity for joint research with PhD students, their supervision and teaching in the program.

Interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply by submitting curriculum vitae, list of publications, research interests, and have three letters of recommendation sent to the above address (email or hardcopy) by October 1st, 2015.

The initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of extension after review.  The anticipated start date is in early 2016. Remuneration is within the framework of the German wage agreement for the public system (TV?D) in level 13, starting from a gross salary of 43970? yearly. Individually determined tax, and contributions for social benfits and statutory health insurance will be deducted.

THE JOINT INSTITUTE FOR VLBI ERIC (JIVE)

is seeking candidates for fixed-term appointment as

                        SUPPORT SCIENTIST

to be located at JIVE, Dwingeloo, The Netherlands.

The European VLBI Network (EVN) is an interferometric array of radio telescopes spread throughout Europe, extending into Asia, Africa, and Puerto Rico, and often observes in conjunction with the e-MERLIN interferometer in the UK and the VLBA in the US.  The Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC (JIVE) is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium hosted at ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy.
JIVE operates the EVN VLBI correlator, provides front-line support to EVN users and member telescopes, and is actively developing new correlator capabilities to promote scientific exploitation of real-time e-VLBI, wide fields of view, and larger global VLBI arrays observing with the African VLBI Network or ALMA.  Dutch universities are within easy reach of Dwingeloo, and interaction with other radio-astronomy institutes throughout Europe provides for a vibrant research atmosphere.  For further information regarding JIVE and the EVN, refer to www.jive.eu and www.evlbi.org.

We invite applications for the position of JIVE Support Scientist, available from the autumn of 2015.  The position has a 50-50 split between support duties and the appointee's own research.  Principal support responsibilities include:
  * assisting EVN users to schedule and analyze VLBI experiments.
  * monitoring EVN performance through dedicated test observations.
  * overseeing the correlation of experiments:  data-quality review,
preparation of PI/station feedback, liaison with users and
      network telescopes, etc.
  * maintaining/developing features of the EVN pipeline.
  * testing new correlator/network capabilities.
The position may also involve a modest amount of other local-service collateral duties, such as visitor coordination or organizing colloquia.

The position requires a Ph.D. in astronomy or other relevant field, and a solid foundation in radio interferometry techniques.  Interest in VLBI processing software would be a plus.  Applicants of any nationality are eligible to apply.  A good command of written and spoken English is essential.

The appointment is offered for one year in the first instance with extension up to a total of three years pending good performance. The appointee will be in the formal employ of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).  The position carries a competitive salary plus an excellent package of secondary benefits, including relocation expenses.

For more information about this vacancy, please contact Erika Timmerman, HR Officer (+31 (0)521-595-212; personnel@astron.nl).
For informal enquiries please contact Dr. R.M. Campbell (campbell@jive.eu).

Applications should contain a CV, list of publications, and a description of research interests.  Please forward application materials to personnel@astron.nl, mentioning ref.No JIVE2015/03.  Please arrange for three letters of reference to be sent separately to the same address.
All application materials should arrive by 22 September 2015.
